E.P. VELIKHOV. The Russian Association for the Advancement of Science is a non-profit organization with the stated goals of promoting cooperation among the members of RAAS, citizens, public associations and other representatives of civil society to promote the full development of Russian science. In a sense, the Russian Association created as an analog of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. AAAS publishes the journal Science, as well as many scientific newsletters, books and reports, which raise the level of understanding of science worldwide. Everybody who works in a science is a scientist. Anyone can join our Association.

Appeal to readers
We pay a huge attention on coverage of developments in industrial production in our inter-industry Almanac. We support the thesis about the transition from resource-based economy to deep processing of products in gas, oil and forestry industries. Authors of the Almanac have consistently pointed out that our main wealth – is the creation of high-tech industry, machine building industries, new materials industry, electronics and other fields. The materials of the Almanac shows how the rocket building can develop manufacture machines for the timber industry, a diversified machinery in the Urals, the creation of medicines in a unique environmentally friendly Altai. Traditionally, every year, in the second edition of the Almanac, we publish statistical information about the development of industrial production by branches. A number of our publications have been dedicated to the development of civil society.

ПРОДУКЦИЯ ОБОРОННОГО КОМПЛЕКСА В ГРАЖДАНСКОЙ СФЕРЕ

Развитие в нашей стране прикладной науки и наиболее прогрессивных производств исторически складывалось таким образом, что особое место в них занимал оборонно7промышленный комплекс (ОПК). Понятие ОПК родилось в 307е годы прошлого столетия, как объединение (синтез) научных учреждений, КБ, предприятий промышленности, базовых производств, ориентированных на выпуск оборонной продукции. Это движение совпало с технической революцией в области вооружений, произошедшей в период между двумя мировыми войнами. Сущность революции заключалась в быстром развитии и внедрении в технические средства вооруженной борьбы продукции (как позднее стали говорить) высоких технологий. V. V. Panov. The development of applied science and the most advanced producing operations in our country historically related with the militaryindustrial complex (OPK). The notion of the military industrial complex was born in 1930 years of the last century, as the merger (synthesis) of research institutions, designengineering departments, industry enterprises, basic industries, focusing on the production of defense products. Destroyed our domestic militaryindustrial complex in the period of «restructuring» 1990-ies, we are not only struggling with the phenomenon of militarization of the economy, but also damaged our own ability to produce high-tech products. At the turn of the century the society and the authorities were aware of the need to protect national interests. The economic safety of the country is unthinkable without its military security, and serious efforts were made to strengthen the militaryindustrial complex, its preserving and development.
